reborn – ikebana / 再生.花

artist statement

there is no other reason, but for her dedication of
her whole life for the belief in the equality of
love on this earth…

11 december, 2010
i was among the audience when shuho gave
a demonstration of ikebana at the HK University Art Museum.
it was about the earth, love, equality, impermanence…

the following night i had a conversation with her
at a friend’s place.

13 december, 2010

my friend abbie gave her a ride to airport and passed me
a message from shuho, she would like to do something together with me (actually i shared the same thought too)…

8 february, 2011
i sent an official invitation to shuho to be one of

my thirty guest artists and she accepted.
our dialogue began.

9 february, 2011
following the path of my find and found series inspired
by the concept of “to exist is to treasure and respect”,
i proposed to collaborate for “reborn-ikebana”,
a project where to start with withered branches and

dead flowers for her ikebana,

and me to take photographs of the process.

we agreed to do the photo shoot on 19/20 march, 2011.

20 february, 2011

i received shuho’s replies in answer to my questions

for our dialogue.
it is a letter written in ink calligraphy…

11 march, 2011
earthquake and tsunami in japan.
because of the uncertainties about the impact,
we pushed back our travel plans for 10 days.

19/27 march, 2011
we corresponded through email.

in the midst of lamenting for the nation’s sufferings,
we deeply believe that reborn-ikebana is a tribute to japan.
while friends and family in hong kong urged me
to reconsider whether to go to kyoto for this project,

my response was that – for the unwavering spirit of

the japanese, i am going.

29/30 march, 2011
we arrived at ginkakuji temple, had our tea…paid respect
to the buddha…toured the garden…settle in our peace…
the whole team gathered and the ritual master, ume
began her chant, to cleanse and send our thoughts
to the suffering people of japan.
shuho clothed herself in a pure white ceremonial gown

made by masters hagakusa toshiaki and hagakusa toshie.

shuho’s “reborn-ikebana” was developed in
seven phases from withering and dying to rebirth
and growth…
it is a cycle of life.

(Kantakara) ,
