artist statement
among the street photos collection that i have taken over the past 40 years, i have chosen around 10,000 photos to share with you. these photos focus on the process of constancy and continuance, instead of results. (the taiwanese buddhist master, master sheng-yen granted me the buddhist name of chang-chi “constancy always”)
or, from another perspective, if there had not been the people, emotions and events that i personally witnessed constantly unfolding, galvanizing, brewing in the background, there would not have been the concepts and ideas in the photography series that appeared later.
i have chosen “enlightenment” as the title for this twenty-volume series. of course, it is nothing compared to the enlightenment, nirvana and the ultimate truth expounded in buddhist teachings. nevertheless, after 40 years of photo-taking on what i like, what i care about; on things that i am curious about, things that moved me, this conversation i have with myself can be the fundamental level in “understanding myself”, “seeing myself”.
在過去四十年紀錄街拍的眾多相片中，選了約一萬張給大家分享，著眼點是恆常和持續的過程（台灣聖嚴法師給我的歸依名字「常持」），而不是結果。
又或者，換個角度說，如果沒有背後，日復日在途上親心見證過的人、情、事，就不會沉澱，發酵發展，歸納到往後的題材性的、觀念性的攝影系列…
我選了「明心見性」給這系列二十本書。當然這跟佛法中理解的覺悟，解脫和究竟完全不能相提並論。然而，拍了四十年照片，什麼我喜歡，什麼是我關心，什麼給我好奇，什麼令我感動…自己跟自己對話了四十年的過程中，也算是最低層次的「明白自己」和「看見自己」。
